Gnathology

The masticatory apparatus.

What is gnathology?

Gnathology is the study of the masticatory apparatus and related functions, such as speech, swallowing, and posture. Issues such as missing teeth, their incorrect positioning, or malocclusions can lead to overstimulation of the masticatory muscles, which can result in neck, back, and lower back pain. Millions of people suffer from occlusal disorders that, if neglected, can cause back pain, headaches, neck pain, and reduced athletic performance.

Temporomandibular disorders

Why consult a gnathologist?

The Gnatology expert specializes in understanding and managing Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) and related musculoskeletal issues. This includes detailed knowledge of the temporomandibular joints, facial muscles, and the joints and muscles responsible for chewing. Typically, people turn to them when they experience pain in the masticatory muscles, the jaw joint, difficulties in jaw coordination, or problems with opening and closing the mouth.

The Issues Addressed by Gnathology

The issues addressed by gnathology can include:

  • Difficulty in Opening and Closing the Mouth: Problems with opening and closing the mouth can be indicative of temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
  • Headaches Related to Dental Occlusion: Poor alignment between the upper and lower jaws can lead to headaches on the sides of the skull.
  • Bruxism: Teeth grinding, often associated with stress, is one of the most common conditions treated by gnathologists. Bruxism, in addition to causing premature wear of dental surfaces, often results in painful contractions of the jaw muscles.
  • Dizziness, Feeling of Instability, or Tinnitus: These symptoms can be connected to temporomandibular joint disorders.
  • Back Pain, Shoulder Pain, and Neck Pain: Occlusal problems can negatively affect posture and cause pain in these areas.
  • Postural Issues: Correcting dental occlusion can also play a crucial role in addressing postural problems, helping to improve body alignment and stability

The Therapies

Therapies in gnathology can vary depending on the severity and specific nature of the disorder, but generally include the following steps:

Therapy begins with a detailed patient history and a comprehensive evaluation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), teeth, facial muscles, and posture. This step is essential for accurately diagnosing the problem.

Many conditions related to these disorders can be treated with conservative therapies. These may include the use of devices such as occlusal splints (or splints for bruxism) to alleviate pain and improve occlusion. Physical therapy may be recommended to relax the masticatory muscles and relieve tension.

In some cases, medications may be prescribed to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and relax facial muscles. These medications may include pain relievers, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or muscle relaxants.

The patient may be advised to avoid hard foods or excessive chewing.

In some cases, modifications to dental occlusion may be necessary through orthodontic treatments or dental prosthetics to restore balance in chewing and joint function.

Use of Botulinum Toxin to Relax Masseter Muscles.

As mentioned earlier, correcting dental occlusion can contribute to improving body posture, so postural therapy may be an integral part of the treatment.
