Once a tooth is gravely damaged by the cavity it might not be possible to use conservative odontology treatments (filling or inlay) to restore it. In this case the tooth crown must be replaced with a custom-made cup created in the laboratory.
Today these crowns are made with a very aesthetic material: zirconia ceramic. Zirconia is also used to create dental bridges where more than one tooth is missing.
Both crown and bridges could be fixed on the original tooth or on implants (see Implantology section). )
With the application of a crown, an aesthetic and functional solution can be achieved to various problems resulting from carious erosion or for other reasons of the hard tissues of the tooth.
This prosthetic reconstruction does not involve any damage to adjacent teeth since it merely complements the anatomy of the damaged element or corrects a defect in it.
